What is a Chief?

Unity of the Chiefs Wampum belt that tells of their responsibility to join their arms to keep the Circle strong.

  • Called Ho·yá:neh, in the Cayuga language, which means “Men who are of the Good Mind.” He is known as Roiá:ner in the Mohawk language. They represent their family clan and deliberate on matters of important to the clan.
  • A Chief is selected by the Clan Mother, usually from men within the kahwá:tsire (family lineage), and subject to removal from office by decision of Iakoiá:ner. She holds the horns, meaning she carries a short string of white wampum that serves as credentials for her Chief. This wampum string symbolizes the deer antlers that are placed on his head as a sign of his authority to act as a Chief.
