Lead Story #5: Expressing gratitude

Lead Story #5: Expressing gratitude

An example of our worldview can be found in Seneca language linguist Eileen Bardeau Williams understanding of a simple phrase.

The Seneca word nyawëh means ‘thanks’; not thank you, but simply “thanks”. There is no part in the word nyawëh that translates as ”you”.

Nyawëh is spoken after one finishes a meal. Gratitude is not given to the cook, but rather to the Creator for having provided sustenance in food to be cooked, served, and enjoyed.
