Geonda’sho’oh ge:ido’ – trees

(pronounced Guh-on-dah-shoh-oh guh-EE-doh.)

Oral tradition tells us that up in the Sky World is a Celestial Tree whose flowers give off light. From the Celestial Tree roots came bits of life that were carried into this world by the Sky Women who fell from that upper world. Her grandson, the one we call Our Creator, began to make trees, bushes and grasses from the living soil of the Turtle Island.

We maintain our relationship to the trees by giving thanks to them every time we gather. We hold special ceremonies to thank the Sugar Maple for the sap that flows in the spring. We still believe in the Great White Pine, the Tree of Peace, planted here by the Peacemaker over 1,000 years ago.
