The Skarù·rę? joined the Haudenosaunee Confederacy around 1720. They had been living in North Carolina (recall Migration story), however, two wars with the English and Palatine colonists forced the Skarù·rę? to seek asylum among their northern Haudenosaunee relatives.
This belt documents the admission of the Tuscarora Nation. The diagonal bars represent rafters or braces – poles that are added to the original framework to strengthen the House. The Tuscaroras were given lands with Oneida Nation territory and sit in the Grand Council was one of the Younger Brothers.
