Moving beyond mascots

In 2023 the State of New York Education Department issued a new rule (Part 123) that prohibits public schools from using Indigenous-themed mascots, names, and logos and requires them to be replaced unless they have the express consent of the relevant Indigenous group.

At least 133 schools in 55 districts had mascots that fit that criteria.
