Changing our words I

We were to call ourselves Haudenosaunee or Rotinonhsón:ni (pronounced ro-dee-no-shon-nee) – “they are building an extended house.”

The longhouse is a metaphor for the Kaianere’kó:wa (pronounced Gie-uh-nuh-reh-GO-wah) Great Law of Peace, our governing document.

– The Dutch called us Irokesen.
– The French called us Iroquois.
– The English called us the Five Nations, or the Six Nations.

Collectively, we call all the Indigenous peoples Ögwë’ö:we: (pronounced OH-gway-oh-WAY, and means Original, Real People).
