Haudenosaunee means people who built long houses. The longhouse was covered with bark. Two or more such longhouses would comprise a village. Often, the longhouses were surrounded by a wood pole wall called a palisade. The entire village would relocate from time to time. Fields of crops would surround the village. Land trails connected the village to sources of water, hunting lands, and other villages.
