Called Go·yá:neh in Cayuga, meaning “Women of the Good Mind,” and Iakoiá:ner (Mohawk for Clan Mother) the responsibility of upholding the peace in families, Clans and nations was and still is the role of the Clan Mother. The Clan Mother selects the Clan spokesman to represent them in council. The Clan Mothers also make sure that the children are raised in the ways and customs of the Longhouse.”
